IS A ‘JUNK SCRAPER’ A THREAT TO LONDON?

The clocks are ticking down on the life expectancy of London’s dump.

In fact, this is expected to hit its trash limit by 2025, and a solution is yet to be found.

The landfill on Manning Drive could grow anywhere between five and nine stories, and be high enough to take on 15 to 26 meters of new junk. This, clearly, is an issue.

We, at KwikSweep, do not this as a step forward, but rather as one backwards.

Our waste removal efforts always focus on recycling, and the expansion of London’s landfill is not in line with our ethos.

At present, there seems to be three options on the table to deal with this landfill issue. Yet, unfortunately, all three have one thing in common, and that is building up.

Londoners will have the chance to vote on one of the following three options.

  • Build up by 26 meters.

  • Build up by 18 meters and out to the north by 27 hectares.

  • Build up by 15 meters and out to the west by 36 hectares.

To us, given our commitment to eco-friendly waste removal, all three options are not satisfactory.

In fact, expansion of this site entails a series of key concerns.

On the one hand, increasing the capacity of London’s landfill will make it harder to meet the Mayor’s recycling rate target.

On the other hand, smell and traffic will increase in the area surrounding the landfill.

According to the Mayor of London, the city’s goal is to divert 60 per cent of trash from this landfill by 2022. Yet, expanding the latter is surely not the best way to meet this goal.

To us, at KwikSweep, expansion is not the right direction. Instead, the city should focus on alternative solutions, such as composting and recycling.

For the time being, Londoners can rely on KwikSweep for ethical junk removal, as well as house and garden clearings.
