OUR WORST RECYCLING MISTAKES

Posted on

Nobody’s perfect. We all make mistakes.

Yet, we dislike admitting them.

This is why we barely ever talk about recycling mistakes.

Kwik Sweep, a leader in waste collection and removal in London, is here to break this silence.

In a recent survey of more than 2,000 Brits, not one person surveyed was capable of completing the quiz answering all questions correctly.

Among the most common mistakes people make at home or at work, about half (44 per cent) of Brits are putting hand soap pump dispenser tops in their recycling bins, while they should be removed from the hand soap bottle. Also, a third (34 per cent) erroneously think that used kitchen roll is recyclable. Oh, and nearly one fifth (20 per cent) are recycling coffee cups, pizza boxes, and plastic bags, the worst polluter of all.

If unsure, only one third of all British people (33 per cent) take the time to look an item up to decide whether it should go in the rubbish or recycling bin.

Below is a list of the items that most commonly get thrown into the recycling bin, even though they should not.

  • Soap pump dispenser tops (44 per cent).
  • Used kitchen roll (34 per cent).
  • Shiny / metallised wrapping paper (26 per cent).
  • Coffee cups (24 per cent).
  • Non-bottle Glass (23 per cent).
  • Plastic bags (22 per cent).
  • Straws (21 per cent).
  • Soft plastic (19 per cent).
  • Photo paper (18.5 per cent).

According to Ivvet Modinou, head of engagement at the British Science Association: “The industry as a whole needs to address this issue if we are to collectively improve recycling performance.”

We, at Kwik Sweep, cannot help but agree with Mrs. Modinou.

Our company endeavours to deliver fast, cheap, efficient, and eco-friendly waste removal and collection services across London – and most importantly, to recycle or reuse all the materials we collect.
