MPs JOIN THE RECYCLING TRAIN

Supermarkets and drinks firms may soon have to pay for plastic recycling, the Guardian notes.

The Environmental audit committee is in fact planning on making supermarkets, retailers, and drinks companies pay more towards the recycling of the plastic packaging they sell, and we could not be more excited about it.

At KwikSweep, we believe in the potential of recycling, and as green, waste removal experts, we find this initiative of government thrilling.

Our team is glad to hear that members of the environmental audit committee have finally called for a change, looking to reduce the 7.7 billion plastic water bottles used each year, and to embed a culture of carrying reusable containers.

Michael Gove, the environment secretary, has already called for evidence on a plastic bottle deposit scheme, and this is expected to become part of a new series of eco-friendly measures he will announce in the new year.

KwikSweep finds it unjust that companies in the UK that produce plastic waste are one of the lowest contributors towards its recycling. This is upsetting, and it is even more so when considering that taxpayers pay 90% of recycling costs.

While waste removal and junk clearance are not as complex as the drafting of policies on recycling, we still find it hard to believe that a central solution to the 15 million plastic bottles that are littered, sent to landfill, or incinerated every day in the UK is yet to be found.

Yet, we are glad to notice that, at least, some progress is being made.

In this regard, Samantha Harding, litter programme director at the Campaign to Protect Rural England, has claimed that “England does need a deposit return system to save us from the plastic choking our countryside and coasts.”

At KwikSweep, we hope this government’s initiative will be the answer to her plea, with which we could not agree more.

Waste removal is our strength, but we need government, and its initiatives, to make a start making a real, green difference.
