WHAT IF YOUR RECYCLING WAS BEING INCINERATED?

In the past, we have already talked about how China’s ban on imported waste is leading to a UK pile-up. However, what if we were now on the verge of burning the waste we cannot recycle?

KwikSweep, London’s leading waste disposal company, is taking this issue seriously.

There is evidence that some of the plastics, paper, and cardboard that people separate from non-recyclable waste is ending up being burned with everything else!

At present, the UK is burning almost more waste than it recycles, and this is shocking. There is a logic to generating electricity from the waste that cannot be recycled, but this is meant to be a “last-resort” solution.

Instead, what we have created is a money-driven system of incinerators that ought constantly to be fed. Our waste is now often diverted to newly built incinerators, rather than increasing levels of recycling. In fact, in the past five years, the recycling rates of domestic junk has almost flatlined, at just over 11 million tonnes a year.

This is not due to our reluctance to recycle. It is due to the redirection of waste from recycling facilities to incinerators.

Burning waste harms global temperatures, and there are fears over the health impacts of such a practice due to the weakness of the air pollution monitoring systems of our incinerators.

So far, the government has failed to take responsibility for the impact of non-recycled waste on the world we live in. The China ban, for instance, shows how weak the UK’s approach to waste is, as it merely relied on exporting recycling and burning the rest.

If we are to save our planet, more needs to be done.

KwikSweep is a good starting point to protect planet earth. We strive to recycle everything we collect, and to dispose of unrecyclable materials appropriately.
