Recycle or Upcycle?

Recycle or Upcycle?

Ever thought about the amount of stuff you own?

Human beings constantly accumulate possessions. From books and DVDs to kitchen equipment, unwanted birthday presents, and clothes that no longer fit, plenty of people find it near impossible to throw anything away.

We’re targeted daily by advertisers who spend their time thinking up new and clever ways online, in print and on social media to persuade us to buy more and more stuff – and we fall for it! Last year, on Black Friday, shoppers spent nearly $3 billion on online purchases alone.

But how much of all this stuff do we actually need?

From fashionistas with capsule wardrobes to trendy restaurants offering only two or three choices on the menu, paring back is a lot easier than it seems (and believe us, it makes things a whole lot easier when you move house!).

There are a few easy ways to start cutting down on clutter.

One simple way to start is to look at the things you own, and ask yourself how often you use them.

Are you really going to re-read those books on the bottom shelf? How often do you watch your DVDs, when Netflix is only a click away? What about that juicer you bought in the sales six months ago and haven’t worked out how to use yet?

Be honest with yourself. We all know what it’s like to have a “guilt bag” under the stairs, full of clothes you meant to take to Help the Aged months ago. Do yourself a favour and take them to your nearest charity shop; you’ll free up space and feel good about helping those in need.

You might want to use eBay or Gumtree to get rid of stuff you no longer use or need. The online selling process is easy to understand, plus it’s a great way to make a little extra cash.

Why not get crafty?

A lick of paint or varnish is a fantastic way to improve and update old furniture you thought was past its best. Plenty of places offer upcycling courses which will help you make the most out of your old belongings.

Broken DVD players, cracked TVs and any other electrical items are harder to dispose of, but don’t just stash them in a cupboard. KwikSweep can give you a hand getting rid of them, alongside any bulky items you might find hard to dispose of by yourself – just give us a call on 0207 624 9215 to find out how we can help
