HOW TO… REDUCE YOUR PLASTIC WASTE

Kwik Sweep knows that plastic is a problem

As waste collection experts, we collect and strive to recycle tons of plastic every year.

Now, we want you to support us. So, if you want to cut down on plastic, read this article, it might teach you a thing or two about how to save our planet.

Below are five practical, easy things that anyone can do to reduce plastic waste. If everyone addressed their personal plastic footprint with these three tips, we could make a real difference to this detrimental epidemic.

  • Avoid straws.

Straws are the fifth most common item of rubbish, and while they are only used for 20 minutes on average, they take up to 500 years to break down. Unfortunately, only a very tiny fraction of plastic straws is recycled, and most end up in landfill, rivers, or in the sea. Say no to straws, unless you really need one.

  • Use reusable coffee cups.

One in 400 coffee cups are recycled in the UK. One in 400. Think how much waste that is. You can try and invert this trend by simply using a cup that will not damage the environment. There really is no excuse not to. Many companies will even reward you if you use a reusable cup. Starbucks offer 25p off their beverage, while Pret will five you 50p off any hot drink.

  • Use reusable bottles.

Plastic bottles are one of the biggest enemies of the environment and NINE times out of TEN they are not necessary. The world uses on average a million plastic bottles a minute, and most do not even get recycled. In the UK, for instance, just over half of the country’s plastic bottles are recycled. So, start using reusable bottles. It will make a huge difference, believe us.
