WHY FLY-TIPPING IS NOT THE WAY OUT

In the UK, fly-tipping is generally described as the illegal dumping of waste.

This, which can result in dangers to our health, is known to pollute the environment, and is thus considered a serious criminal offence.

Here at KwikSweep, we are committed to the fight against fly-tipping, and here is why.

Fly-tipping is against UK Law

When it comes to fly-tipping, fines are not cheap. If you fly-tip, chances are that you may incur in fines of up to £50,000 or 12 months’ imprisonment. When you consider that KwikSweep can dispose of your waste for a fraction of that money, do you really believe fly-tipping is worth the risk?

Fly-tipping hurts the UK economy

Cleaning-up fly-tipping is expensive. This now costs as much as £50 million as cases in England have risen for the third year in a row. With post-crisis financial pressures causing public waste collection services to be cut, fly-tipping is the sort of problem that hurts the UK economy.

Fly-tipping fuels illegal businesses

To protect yourself, the environment, and your pocket, you should always rely on companies that are licensed to carry waste and are insured. This is due to the existence of rouge traders, who collect waste and dump it across the country, regardless of existing regulations.

Fly-tipping damages our health

Toxic substances that can be found within household goods, if not disposed of correctly, can kill both animals and people. These substances can also sink deep within the ground, preventing greeneries from growing and polluting our water supplies.

The causes of fly-tipping crimes are many, as are the motivations of their perpetrators. However, a lack of waste disposal facilities, laziness, and poor civil education all have a part to play.

The issue with fly-tipping is that it is inherently complex. The Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science, for instance, has concluded that fly-tipping is not one problem but several distinguishable problems calling for different solutions.

That said, at KwikSweep, we believe there are at least six measures business can take to prevent fly-tipping.

Comply

Ensure that your own business waste is disposed of in a safe, responsible way (Failing to ensure waste is disposed of correctly is an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990).

Prevent

Keep gates and fences around your business secure, locked and in good condition. Keep plants and hedges neat to ensure good visibility and install signage to show that fly-tippers will be prosecuted.

Report

Tell the local council about fly-tipping incidents near you. Waste that is left unchecked has the potential to encourage further incidents.

React!

If your business is often affected by fly-tipping, consider enlisting a security patrol team. Alternatively, consider movable CCTV cameras, and install LED lighting to discourage fly-tippers from acting in your area.

Finally, be like us! We encourage you to stand by our Logo statement “aggressive on waste for a sustainable future.”

Together, we can fight fly-tipping, and put an end to it.
