SHOULD LONDON COPY WALES?

The Eco-friendly policies of Wales make the country the second-best household recycler in the world, while England lags far behind other countries, the Guardian states.

With recycling rates of 63.8% for municipal solid waste, which also includes plastics and other forms of packaging, Wales is set to top the world’s recycling-rate table by next year, according to a study from the environmental analysts of Eunomia.

At the same time, in England, the recycling rate is low, at only 42.8%.

We, at KwikSweep, believe that something should be done to change this. England, and its capital city, London,  as well and being one of the best places to live it should in fact lead the battle against waste.

Dominic Hogg, chairman of Eunomia, knows these results are worrying for England.

To him, “It’s great to see the ambition of the Welsh bearing fruit, with their recycling rates close to the top of the table. It’s embarrassing for England, which … is standing still in terms of performance and dropping in the rankings as others continue to progress.”

He also noted that “we know that the public is concerned about the growing problem of waste, especially the way plastics are dealt with.”

KwikSweep, just like Mr. Hogg, recognised that waste in England is becoming a problem. As our waste and junk removal business operates in London, we know just how difficult it is to deal with garbage in the capital.

Perhaps, England should try and copy Wales. The latter’s recycling rate has in fact increased from just under 5% to 64% in just 20 years. This means that, at present, Wales is on track to meet its 70% target by 2025.

KwikSweep’s award-winning efforts to tackle waste have a positive effect all over London, but more needs to be done by the government and local authorities.

As Simon Ellin of the Recycling Association put it, “if the government is serious about waste recycling they need a coherent plan and they need to put the investment in.”

The KwikSweep team is ready to continue its fight. We hope the government is, too.
