WASTE IN THE ARCTIC – A SAD REALITY

It was bound to happen.

After years of negligence from our side, plastic waste has started building up in the supposedly pristine wilderness of the Norwegian Arctic, scientists say.

The Kwik Sweep team, whose daily efforts focus on waste removal and collection in London, is saddened by this recent discovery.

According to recent reports, plastic litter has been found almost everywhere in the Arctic where scientists have looked. Now, Norwegian fishermen fear they may lose their reputation for being untouched by pollution.

Norwegian boat owners, in a recent meeting, have admitted that it will take hundreds of years to overcome just a few decades of using the Arctic ocean as a dump.

The extent of this problem had largely been underestimated by Norway’s previous governments.

In fact, a recent synthesis report from the Norwegian Polar Institute claims that there is a great need for more research into the extent of possible harm from plastic.

Geir Wing Gabrielsen, one of the report’s authors, told BBC News that: “We are finding more and more plastic waste in Svalbard, where I work.” He went on claiming that: “At the end of the 1970s we found very few plastic in the stomachs [of fulmars]. In 2013 when we last investigated, some had more than 200 piece of plastic in their stomachs.”

Unfortunately, this sad situation replicates itself almost everywhere on our planet.

Norway’s Environment Minister Ola Elvestuen told BBC News that: “It is disturbing – there is nowhere on Earth that is so far away that it has not been affected by plastics.”

Kwik Sweep is equally shocked by this truth. However, our company works daily to try and reverse this reality.

So, should you need to dispose of you waste in as much an eco-friendly way as possible, get in touch with us. Kwik Sweep’s services are unrivalled. You will not be disappointed.
