CARPET WASTE SAYS NO TO LANDFILL

Is carpet waste being diverted from landfill? Yes, it is.

Why? Read on and you will find out.

Kwik Sweep has recently received confirmation that volumes of carpet waste diverted from landfill in the UK continue to rise, with over 160,000 tonnes reused, recycled, or recovered for energy in 2017.

This corresponds to a diversion rate of 42 per cent, up from 35 per cent if compared to 2016.

As a leader in waste removal and disposal, Kwik Sweep’s efforts have been key to the achievement of such results.

Around 400,000 tonnes of carpet waste are generated yearly in the UK. Yet, this number is not as scary as it used to be.

Energy recovery accounts for 124,000 tonnes, with the increasing use of carpets as a renewable, innovative source of fuel in cement kilns, and 42,000 tonnes were reused or recycled.

Laurence Bird, director of ‘Carpet Recycling UK’ (CRUK), seems pleased with these results. In fact, he said: “we are continuing to advance sustainability in this sector and drive growth in recycling capacity.”

He also added: “Our 2017 achievements clearly show strong progress towards our goal of 60% landfill diversion by 2020. Increased interest in recycling and rising numbers of enquiries also demonstrates that carpet is now regarded as a valued raw material that presents opportunities for reuse in a variety of novel application.”

The Kwik Sweep team is glad to see that society is taking an environmental turn. Carpets are just the beginning. In the coming years, more materials will be increasingly diverted from landfill, benefitting the health of our communities and our planet.

In the meantime, if you want to properly dispose of your waste, give Kwik Sweep a call. We strive to recycle or reuse all materials we collect, so as to help London pollute less.
