ASDA’S WAR ON PLASTIC HAS BEGUN

About time, you may say.

Asda has officially launched a war on plastic. The supermarket is determined to cut the usage of the material across its product line, as well as in all of its stores and offices.

We, at Kwik Sweep, could not be happier about this. Our efforts in waste removal, junk collection, and recycling are finally being matched by one of Britain’s biggest supermarkets.

Shopper at Asda will no longer be able to purchase 5p carrier bags. In fact, the supermarket is about to roll out its new environmental strategy, which will slowly but drastically reduce the amount of plastic waste it generates.

The chain hopes to phase out 5p carrier bags once for all by the end of 2018 and to reduce plastic in its own brand by 10 per cent in the next year.

At the same time, Asda plans to swap plastic straws for paper ones and it aims to remove all single use cups and plastic cutlery from its offices, stores, and cafes by the end of 2019.

Asda’s chief executive, Roger Burnley, has made a series of important claims.

Firstly, he said that: “Our logic is to remove plastic wherever we can, and where it is required, to make it as recyclable as possible.”

Secondly, he claimed that: “We are going to change the polystyrene bases in our pizzas to cardboard, removing 178 tonnes of plastic from customers’ homes.”

He also suggested that: “By changing our coloured drinks bottles to clear plastic, 500 more tonnes of plastic will be recycled.”

Asda’s effort is remarkable and, even though its effects will not be immediate, its impact is bound to help Britain’s environment.

That said, for more immediate waste-related issues, you can always count on Kwik Sweep. Our decade-long experience in waste clearance and collection can help you get rid of your waste concerns.
