NORWEGIAN SOLUTIONS TO OUR PLASTIC PLAGUE

Plastic, plastic, and again, plastic. Will we ever find a solution to our plastic problem?

For us, at Kwik Sweep, the answer is yes.

Reports suggest that the United Kingdom could adopt Norway’s strict plastic bottle recycling system, and you should be excited about it.

Why? Well …

Britain currently recycles just over 50 per cent of the plastic bottles it uses. Norway, instead, recycles more than 97 per cent of all its plastic bottles. Sounds great, right?

We believe it does, and as London’s top-ranking waste collection and removal company, we want to see the same results in the UK.

Government advisers have just come back from Norway, where they have investigated the country’s industry-led scheme credited with increasing plastic bottle recycling levels to 97 per cent.

Their impressions were positive and are thought to prompt widespread reforms.

Britain’s plastic problem has worsened since China’s decision to stop accepting foreign waste and a governmental solution to plastic recycling is now more urgent than ever.

The Norwegian method is believed to be the simplest, and most cost-effective, way of reducing Britain’s plastic waste.

What is it though? How does it work? As you will see, it is surprisingly easy.

  • Consumers pay a small charge on each bottle they buy (i.e. 1 Norwegian Kroner, or 9 British pence, for 500ml bottles, and 2.5 Kroner, or 23 British pence, for larger bottles).
  • When the bottle is returned, either to the shop or a recycling machine, the small charge (deposit) is refunded.
  • On the one hand, shops are given a small handling fee for taking the returned bottles.
  • On the other hand, recycling machines can offer customers vouchers for the shop, or even the option of making a charitable donation.

The Kwik Sweep team finds this solution easily-implementable, cheap, and innovative. It matches out eco-friendly ethos, which we hope the government will embrace, too.

That said, plastic is not our sole concern. We specialise in waste removal, junk collection, and environmental waste-management services.
