IS THE FUTURE OF RECYCLING IN DANGER?

British councils may refuse to recycle plastic and raise taxes as a result of a Chinese ban on imported recycled waste.

Years of recycling progress in the UK are under threat, as the decision may lead to millions of tonnes of plastic waste heading to landfill. Britain, in fact, sends around two-thirds of its plastic waste to China.

In an attempt to pursue self-sufficiency, China will no longer import recycled plastics from March next year, cutting down on foreign garbage.

Local councils fear the repercussion of such move. To local government representatives, this may have a “major impact” on the finances of British councils, and may thus affect the rates and bin collections services.

The KwikSweep team finds this move controversial. The closure of China’s recycling market, the biggest in the world, means that around 540,000 tonnes of plastic waste may now end up in landfills around the world.

We, at KwikSweep, believe that this decision may have a long series of negative consequences. From increased landfill waste, to a higher incidence of fly-tipping incidents, China’s ban on imported recycled waste is bound to have numerous serious repercussions.

Our concerns are confirmed by Lee Marshall’s words, chief executive of the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee. In his opinion:

“Council will try to find the savings by cutting waste services

In the wake of China’s decision, the KwikSweep team is more determined than ever to lead the battle on waste.

Our business, the best in London for waste collection, clearance, and disposal, is ready to help local councils, private businesses, and individuals in their fight to recycle waste.

KwikSweep waste collection services will contribute to limiting the negative consequences of the Chinese Ban, as recycling is something we are deeply committed to.

The future of recycling may now be in danger, but we will do our best to make it bright again.
